Come in, Space Command! U.S. Space Force Headquarters Relocating to Huntsville, Alabama.

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, The White House announced that the U.S. Space
Command, the central hub for coordinating America’s military space operations, will
make a bold leap to Huntsville, Alabama, positioning it at the U.S Army Redstone
Arsenal installation alongside NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the U.S.
Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

The move to Redstone Arsenal marks a new chapter for economic growth and
innovation in the Cotton State. In a nod to history, the program will operate from the
same location where workers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center developed
the Saturn V rocket nearly a generation ago. The Saturn V became a critical
component of the Apollo missions that captivated the world, including the first
manned flight to the moon.

The command’s mission is to coordinate U.S. military space operations, ensuring
the protection of national interests in space, including satellite-based navigation,
communication systems, and missile warning capabilities. Relocation is expected to
create approximately 1,400 new jobs with U.S. Space Command, while projections
estimate up to 3,000 future additional jobs in related sectors, contributing billions of
dollars in economic investment to Alabama.

This relocation underscores the intensifying national focus on space as a domain of
both exploration and defense.

While Huntsville's "Rocket City" legacy, tied to the Apollo-era Saturn V rocket, draws
the military's strategic hub, Starbase's role in commercial innovation remains pivotal.
SpaceX's Starship, developed and tested right here in South Texas, is increasingly
integrated into U.S. Space Force plans through major contracts awarded in 2025,
including over $5.9 billion for 28 national security launches between 2027 and
2032—many of which could leverage Starbase's orbital capabilities once fully
certified. This positions local SpaceX employees and the growing community as key
contributors to America's space superiority, even as military infrastructure
consolidates elsewhere.

Starbase’s emerging national profile, where SpaceX's expansion is already fueling a
local boom with new housing and amenities amid a population nearing 1,200, is
prepared to ride the ripple effect of these new federal investments. Space Force's
2025 contracts with SpaceX for critical satellite deployments (including from
Vandenberg and Cape Canaveral) bolster the company's stability, potentially
accelerating Starbase's infrastructure—like the ongoing Gigabay construction—to
handle more defense-related missions, creating even more high-tech opportunities
close to home.

The relocation of U.S. Space Command to Huntsville is expected to enhance
collaboration between military, NASA, and private industry partners, accelerating
advancements in space technology and national defense capabilities into “the High
Frontier.”

For Starbase families, this national momentum reinforces why our community
remains at the forefront of the "new space race." With Space Force eyeing Texas for
future range expansions beyond Boca Chica, and Starship's reusable tech enabling
rapid military responsiveness, we expect to see heightened collaboration that could
mean more secure funding, training programs, and maybe even joint exercises
visible from our own backyard here in Starbase.

U.S. Space Command’s area of responsibility begins at the Kármán Line, 62 miles
(100 kilometers) above mean sea level, and extends to the moon “and beyond.” Its
operations include managing a multitude of space-based assets critical to national
security.
